#VidyoToolbox: Vidyo Infrastructure 100% Virtualized

Vidyo Interface Vidyo is the leader in virtualized video communications infrastructure. In 2012 we started by virtualizing the VidyoRouterTM, a highly efficient and scalable virtualized media server. In 2013 we added virtualization support for VidyoPortalTM to provide highly scalable call control and management. Last year our focus shifted to virtualizing our interoperability servers, delivering virtual editions of our transcoding and interoperability servers for third party H.323, SIP, Microsoft Lync, and WebRTC. We are excited to announce that we have now extended virtualization support to the final product in our infrastructure portfolio: VidyoReplayTM.  This means all Vidyo infrastructure components are now available and fully supported as virtual appliances. The VidyoReplay VE (virtual edition) delivers all of the same features available in the appliance version of VidyoReplay but in a more flexible virtual appliance form factor. Like the appliance version, VidyoReplay VE can be clustered to scale recording capacity for any sized deployment. VidyoReplay Virtualization In addition to adding virtualization support for VidyoReplay, we have made updates recently to all of our VE products. This includes:

  • VidyoGateway VE and VidyoReplay now automatically detect allocated resources and adjust capacity to fit. This allows you to manage your VM resources more efficiently and optimize your Vidyo deployment specific to your organization’s needs.
  • Virtual editions of Vidyo infrastructure can now be run co-resident with other applications allowing you to utilize CPU resources even more efficiently.
  • The resource allocation and reservation figures have been optimized on most products delivering more capacity per vCPU resource, which is particularly useful when your VMWare environment is limited to 8vCPU virtual machines.

Virtualization doesn’t stop with the data center. Organizations that have chosen to deploy VDI on the desktop no longer have to sacrifice video quality or forgo real-time collaboration in their VDI environment. In the summer of 2014, Vidyo also released VidyoDesktop VE, providing support for Citrix XenApp or XenDesktop. DISA Announces Global Video Service (GVS) FOC


Recently, the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) announced that their Global Video Service (GVS) – based upon technology provided by Vidyo – has reached Full Operational Capability (FOC).  This milestone is the culmination of a process that began in 2012 when Vidyo first received Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC) certification for its video conferencing portfolio tailored to the needs of the Department of Defense (DoD).  Since that time, DISA has built a customized solution on top of the VidyoWorksTM platform.  In June of 2014, DISA announced Initial Operational Capability (IOC) for GVS, taking the first step to move DoD enterprise Video Teleconferencing Capabilities (VTC) from the Defense Information Systems Network (DISN) Video Services – Global (DVS-G) ISDN services to GVS’ IP services. The GVS solution is now installed and operational in some of DISA’s Defense Enterprise Computing Centers (DECCs) and has the capacity to scale to support nearly half a billion conferencing minutes a year.

The GVS foundation and backbone is Vidyo’s H.264 SVC, JTIC-certified software solution. GVS allows the end-user to reliably connect, collaborate and make decisions with secure HD video on existing devices (conference room, PC and MAC) over any general purpose IP network (LAN/WAN, 3G/4G, radio, satellite). Support for Android and iOS devices is currently being piloted and is expected to be added in 2015. GVS integrates with existing standards based H.323 and SIP based systems and is available on both NIPR and SIPR networks.

DISA’s GVS service includes:

#VidyoToolbox: Better User Experience for Third Party Systems with VidyoGateway

Interoperability with third party H.323 and SIP based videoconferencing systems has always been a hallmark of the Vidyo experience. VidyoGateway™ delivers affordable interoperability that is easy to deploy, manage, and scale. Now, with the release of the latest v.3.2 of VidyoGateway software, new features improve the user experience for participants joining from third party endpoints.

Participants connecting from H.323 or SIP systems can now enjoy a new layout view for multipoint calls. The new gallery view delivers a 7+1 layout with the active speaker prominently displayed and up to 7 other participants located in a strip below.

VidyoGateway Teleconferencing

In addition to a new screen layout, third party endpoints also will receive updated notification information. If the conference is being recorded with VidyoReplay™, both audio and on screen indicators will be played when a recording is initiated. When other participants join or leave the conference, participants on third party systems will receive audio join and leave tones. Whether you’re participating from a Vidyo client or a third party system, you will always know the current status of the conference.

This release also brings added flexibility for administrators of VidyoGateway Virtual Edition (VE). The virtual edition of the VidyoGateway now detects the amount of resources that have been allocated and automatically sets the capacity. This means administrators have the flexibility to size the VidyoGateway to their exact capacity needs to use resources more efficiently. Administrators also have the ability to run multiple instances of the VidyoGateway VE on a single physical host. Combined with the existing VidyoGateway clustering support, the VidyoGateway VE enables high availability and precise sizing of the Vidyo system.

Telemedicine Reduces Patient Wait Times


It was a milestone year for Vidyo and its partners across various industries with Vidyo’s reliable, integrated visual enablement solution being recognized to be an indispensable resource for key players in the financial services, service provider and healthcare sectors, among others. Looking to 2015 we are optimistic about the continued growth of video conferencing in healthcare. VidyoWorksTM has already been selected as the platform of choice and is deeply integrated into many applications by 39 of the top 100 Integrated Delivery Networks (IDNs).

One of our partners, American Well, selected the VidyoWorks platform for its telehealth service offering. Their customers include Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Wellpoint and others. American Well’s app, which connects users to a live doctor anytime via a mobile or desktop device, is among the most popular healthcare apps in both the Android and iOS stores, with 3,000-4,000 downloads per day1 and American Well customer, WellPoint, shared that their free mobile app, LiveHealth Online, has saved patients two hours or more when accessing care2.

In 2014 an estimated 5.7 million total video conference-enabled patient visits were conducted across the United States, which is expected to nearly triple to 16 million+ next year and skyrocket to 130 million in 20183.

Moreover, this year’s adoption of a model telemedicine policy by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB)4 brought long-awaited guidance on telehealth practices to help further the delivery of convenient, clinically meaningful video-enabled encounters.  VidyoWorks enables physicians and care providers to have such live, immediate and secure interactions with patients.

And we didn’t even break a sweat doing it! Apple announced the availability of the 27” iMac with Retina 5K Display on October 16, 2014.  Many of the bloggers wondered if there would be applications for 5K screen resolution beyond having room for tool-bars while editing 4K videos. We, at Vidyo, saw an opportunity to innovate and had one of these devices in our possession about 10 days after launch.  Within hours, we experienced the world’s first 5K videoconference.

That’s why announcing WebRTC support for both, is the natural progression as we take our next step in our WebRTC strategy.
