Rush Medical University Video Visits for VetsVirtual healthcare is one weapon that military veterans can use to combat a variety of behavioral ills — from depression to PTSD — they may suffer after their tours of duty have ended. Virtual care is the natural next step in the progress of providing mental healthcare to our veterans, and Vidyo is proud to contribute to that progress. To commemorate Veterans Day, we want to salute a client who is using our virtual health solutions to provide much-needed healthcare to vets.

Road Home Program LogoThe Road Home Program at the Center for Veterans and Their Families at Rush University Medical Center provides mental and behavioral healthcare to veterans and their families, regardless of the veteran’s discharge status or their ability to pay. The nonprofit program, which began in 2014 and added Vidyo early in 2018, is part of the national Warrior Care Network and is spearheaded by Blake Schroedter, a 17-year military veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Each month the Road Home Program runs an intensive, three-week on-site trauma treatment course for veterans, followed by monthly follow-ups in specific behavioral health areas chosen by each vet. The program offers remote vets the option to select a phone or video conversation during which a counselor collects information such as family and military history and symptom onset. By seeing the veteran via video, however, the counselor can observe other important indications of their mental health, such as hygiene and other physical signs of depression.

“The Road Home Program is unique in that it already provides outpatient therapy to veterans in their homes via video,” Schroedter said. “Separately, the VA is now launching a pilot study to do just that, so it’s terrific to see that the Road Home Program at Rush is right where virtual care is going to help provide our veterans the medical care they so desperately need.”

Rush University’s The Road Home Program is one of three finalists vying for the second annual Leaders Innovating Health (LIT) Award at the Vidyo Healthcare Summit. This educational and exclusive virtual care event will be held at the Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona, from December 3 to 5, 2018.
